Tips and Tricks
and
Avian Education Center
Feather or Wing trimming is far easier then most people think.
One ever so important tip that can save the lives of your little feathered friends. Never, I repeat Never let Teflon pans burn in the same house or room with birds of any size or breed. The fumes from the burning Teflon are extremely poisonous and the effect is almost immediate and permanent. There is no cure for this and it is a very painful way for your feathered friend to go.
Know the enemy.

Baby Possum (1st on left). Adult Possum (last on
right).
This is a sample of Possum
Poop (center). As you can see it is relatively large for such a small pest.
Possums will eat your feathered friends and their food.
Set the appropriate traps and keep your birds safe.
***Remember that trapping a pest such as these and
returning them to their
natural habitat is far kinder allowing them to raid your Aviary.***
Call your local Animal control officer for assistance in your area.
Beware of plants that may be poisonous to your feathered friends.

Breeders special information.
Star Gazers....
Star-gazers refers to any neurological disorder that is characterized by mental dullness, abnormal posture, and an inability to move forward in a normal fashion. In birds it is characterized by a severely twisted cervical/ neck position, creating a "starward gaze." - thus we see how the name originated; it has also been called 'wryneck' and 'twirling'. With some the neck is twisted on and set on their back.
Possible causes include:
- protozoan parasites
- viruses
- heat damage
- accident/ trauma,
- Vitamin B Deficiency
- but infections by bacteria are by far the most common.
- accident at the egg sack, lack of nutrients
- wrong drugs administered
- dirty equipment used to feed
- shipping problems
